Description

Details

The history of Srikakulam is connected with the hoary past of Kalinga, a political division of ancient India. The Mahabharata, the Ramayana, the Puranas, and the Buddhist Jataka tales confirm the antiquity of the region. The epic Mahabharata mentions that a tribe called Andhras / Kalingas fought for the Kauruva’s against the Pandava’s. The history of the district can be traced to the period when the Nanda’s ruled over this region in 4th century B.C. After Mahapadma Nanda subjugated northern India, he assimilated Kalinga into his vast empire. Pre-Mauryan black polished potteries and punch marked coins belonging to that era indicate that Kalinga was a prosperous state under the Nanda rule.
